Head Chef, Marty Cattaneo Touches on the "Style" of The Alley

While it has been a little bit since our last blog post, we have been hard at work hammering out details that will be the foundation of your experience at The Alley Los Altos.

alleyblog (4 of 5).jpg

The first major decision is the style of service that will be used. We hope to offer a more communal, casual environment than is found in a more traditional restaurant setting. The difficult part in this is how to offer this casual feeling without losing the top notch service that our clientele will demand. One big step is to offer items in a “family style” or “shared” format, in which guests interact and share a meal with friends and loved ones.

alleyblog (5 of 5).jpg

A great example of this service style are the lamb chops as seen here, which will be available for order “by the chop.” If you are dining alone, you can enjoy one as a snack. If dining with friends, order 3, 4, or 8 (an entire rack). These chops are dressed with fig, pine nuts, and mint. Along with the lamb chops, we are playing with a whole grilled fish. We will have a large, wood fired grill that will allow us prepare delicious dishes like this. The fish is sauced with aji amarillo sauce, a traditional accompaniment in Peru. Also pictured above are my sous chefs for the day (the Heff girls). We are hoping to sidestep some child labor laws ;)

Another huge part of the overall experience are the plates we choose to serve the food on. Below are some examples of the beautiful pottery we are considering. All of these come from Jered’s Pottery in Berkeley, just across the bridge from us here in Los Altos. Jered has been making pottery for 20 years and shares the same devotion to locality that we do. He sources almost all of his clay from Northern California, creating a plate that is local. This is a direct extension of our ideal in the products we serve at The Alley.

Letterpressed at The Makery

One of the newest additions to The Makery is our beautiful letterpressed posters! Which brings up the question: What is letterpress?

Screen Shot 2013-09-05 at 4.56.44 PM.png

Letterpress is a form of relief printing, formerly the primary method of printing newspapers and books.  Letterpress is seeing a revival as an art form and here at The Makery, we are proud to have a vintage Vandercook 4t printing press.

Event Florals by The Botanist

20130827_bayshore_22.jpg

Arranging and styling with flowers is one of my favorite things to do. I especially love the fall foliage and branches that are coming into season right now.

RT7A0847bumble_23andme.jpg

I enjoy seeing seasonal arrangements that look as if they have come right out of the garden. My style is organic and natural, sometimes a little cookoo.... but I like letting the flowers speak for themselves. We do flowers for all kinds of events and would be happy to put together something unique, seasonal and special just for you.

Call ahead for a consultation!

Our Summer on the State Street Green

A pop-up park has appeared on State Street in downtown Los Altos this summer as part of the City of Los Altos' First Street Streetscape Improvement Project. Construction work shut down the intersection of First and State Street from early July to mid August, so the city and local supporters felt it was an exciting opportunity to create a public gathering space downtown: The State Street Green!

DIfferent businesses are contributing to the fun by sponsoring free events for the public to enjoy. An array of concerts and shows have been put on for family fun entertainment in addition to Exploratorium Exhibits every Sunday, Story Hours by Linden Tree, Music and Performers by PLAY and lots more exciting stuff!

The Bubble Man was a big hit. The kids spent the 2 hours running, jumping and clawing at these orbs of soap as they flew through the air. No one left the green without popping at least one bubble or capturing at least one image on their smart phones!

There's also been a concert series worth grabbing some lawn for! The band Orange Sherbet stopped by the green as guests of Bumble and PLAY! to put on a show for the little ones and their families.

The Happily Ever Laughter Faeries performed some great Faerytails and face paint. Also Furs, Scales and Tails Live Animal show and "Yoga on the Green" with Stretch.Play.Yoga were a blast as well!

Though the Green is being rolled up on Monday, we've made so many fun memories out in the DTLA sunshine. Stop by tonight for some live music in front of Outer Space Art Gallery @ 5pm.

And we'll see you next summer State Street Green!

H&H Founder Blogs about The Botanist Opening!

The Botanist is the newest addition to The H & H :) (and for a good long while - hopefully the last new addition!!) Marisa Lyssand is the official "Botanist" and has such an amazing eye for all things flowers and garden. She and her sister Alicia, who is Director of The Makery, have been helping me with a bunch of projects around work and home. Our little town flower shop just went out of business and a space opened up - so we put our heads together and came up with The Botanist!

It's a beautiful store for all things floral and home... succulents, air plants, orchids, cut flowers that are local and seasonal and lots of awesome one-of-a-kind flea market and vintage finds. We've been scouring the fleas for months and will continue to do it to keep our stock ready for buying! Come check us out at 363 State Street in Downtown Los Altos.

Arrangements - small to large for $45-150

Makery Debuts Onesie Line

Our screen printing team has been hard at work perfecting an awesome set of colors to go in this adorable Makery Made "Photo of the Month" Onesie Set and we love the way this came out.

And we thought what better way to celebrate the birth of a New Prince than to debut our new onesie line! We were inspired by the Piece created by Mary Heffernan and Sara Montgomery as Mary and Sara continue to shoot photographs of baby Tessa each week for an entire year!

Final Touches to PLAY!

Play was searching for that last little touch to finish off our new space, so we thought we would visit our friends over at The Makery to get some inspiration.

We were happy to find just what we needed, a rainbow of paints and all kinds of letters.

With a little color selection, painting and placement, we had an amazing rainbow alphabet to perfectly accent our new and improved playroom!

A Special Delivery from The Makery

This Makery Made special order was by far my favorite since we’ve opened.  On July 11th, 2013 Makery owner and H & H founder, Mary Heffernan and my very talented sister, Marisa Lyssand, opened The Botanist in Downtown Los Altos.

RT7A1340botanist_balloon.jpg

A little festive decoration was necessary to show off the beauty of this new addition to The H & H! Since The Botanist is already spilling over with amazing florals, plants and antique finds I had to come up with the perfect party accent. This custom Makery Made giant round balloon and tissue tassel couldn’t have been a more perfect fit for the occasion.  I went a little off the beaten path and chose black and gold!  The colors fit right in to the theme of the store.  I’m so used to doing these huge balloons in bright colors so this unexpected choice was really fun.

I was thrilled to walk it over from The Makery on opening day. Every bit of thought and effort that went into The Botanist shows from the second you walk in!  Take some time to stop by and see for yourself, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Bumble: Tell us your Summer Story

Calling all kids!  Friday, July 19th will mark the start of Bumble Playroom's ongoing hosted Summer Community Kids Project.

We will be covering our walls with brightly colored flower cutouts; each unique flower will tell a story about your child's summer vacation experience, or their "best of" summer moment.

Chef Marty Cattaneo, "Outstanding in the Field"

sister_moment (5 of 10).jpg

This past weekend I was lucky enough to be a part of a wonderful event on a private beach just north of Santa Cruz. I along with my good friend Kim Alter of Haven Restaurant in Jack London Square co-cheffed at Outstanding in the Field. The event took place at Secret Cove Beach just north of Santa Cruz. It is a fun event for us because we are asked to cook over only an open flame, without running water or electricity. It is quite a challenge and one that completely removes us from our comfort zones.

sister_moment (7 of 10).jpg
sister_moment (3 of 10).jpg

The guests arrived and were served a few passed appetizer while they sipped some tasty wines from Mick Unti of Unti vineyards. There were 160 guests all together and they were seated one, long, beautiful table just along the waters edge. Among them were Mary and Brian, Alicia and Marissa (of The Makery and The Botanist), and some of Brian’s family.

We started with a corn and tomato salad. The corn was taken off the cob, juiced, and cooked until it thickened slightly. Resting on the corn were sliced cherry and heirloom variety tomatoes dressed lightly in a balsamic vinaigrette. It was topped with smoked ricotta cheese, basil and almond pesto, and pumpernickel croutons.

Second course was charred watermelon and Monterey squid with shiso and watermelon vinaigrette.

sister_moment (9 of 10).jpg
sister_moment (8 of 10).jpg

The entree was some beautifully grilled salmon from just south of Santa Cruz. It sat upon some potatoes from Roscoe Zuckerman’s farm that were roasted over the fire and dressed with a miso garlic butter.

For dessert, bay leaf mousse with macerated cherries and strawberries and black pepper shortbread.

sister_moment (6 of 10).jpg

We had a great time and can’t wait to do another dinner next year, just make sure you are able to join us!
